Day 359 – Escape from Cambodia

Yesterday we had a full day of sightseeing in Angkor Wat.

Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations.

My favorite temple is Ta Prohm Temple, where the movie Tomb Raider was shot. The temple has been left untouched by archaeologists except for the clearing of a path for visitors. Most of the temples are overgrown and covered by trees and their gigantic roots.

In the evening we went out to meet fellow overlander Marc from https://web.facebook.com/me.motorcycle.world He got stuck in Cambodia for several weeks because his motorbike is broken and is waiting for some spare parts from Europe.

As more and more borders are closing and we don`t want to get stuck in Cambodia, we decided to leave the country and go back to Thailand.

So we started after breakfast and drove 2 hours to a small border north of Siem Reap. There would be also another border (Poipet), but that one should be full of scammers and a pain to cross.

We were a little nervous because of our problems that I listed yesterday
But it all went very smoothly, officers were nice and the whole process was done in 2 hours. We just had to explain the change of the exit point, our body temperature was taken and we had to answer a few questions from the quarantine officer, who gave us the health certificate to receive the visa.
We also got the permit for our vehicles without any questions. On our first entry to Thailand from Myanmar, we had to book a guide and make s special permit. But fortunately, this rule is not enforced at all borders.

Now we are back in Thailand and will continue to Bangkok tomorrow.
